Twitter has become such a large part of my life that I wanted to follow the lead of the people I interact with on twitter and give you some names of people who I think you should be following as well. This list is in no way complete or comprehensive, as I have time I will continue to add to it.

Ask Twitter vs Google:

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Over the last few months I have made huge transition from asking Google questions to asking Twitter. In my experience I get better information from my followers and a few good twitter search sites, than I ever did digging through Google… I love not having to wade through pages and pages of people who have posted on their blogs that : “ they have tried but have not found the answer they need”.  Why not interact with people vs asking a huge computer?

I can see the emails now! “But I don’t have thousands of people following me!” well you have a few options, when you ask a question ask people to “RT” ( Re Tweet) you and you can also you these sweet tools:

twitQA ::  Is not the most beautiful site, its about as Plane Jane as they come, but it allows you to ask your questions in different categories : Sports, General, Travel, Cars, Environment, News, Health.  What makes this great is that twitQA can see questions and gets the info from the Twitter feed, vs you searching hastages on www.search.twitter.com .

IKnowTweet :: is very simple and easy to use it will look for phrases  such as “ Where is Asheville, NC” or “Why Is Asheville Really Beer Town USA” It then brings all the answers to one place for you to sort through. There’s an option to answer the questions and a list of popular terms; unfortunately, the site doesn’t list answers anywhere, which makes it a lot less useful than it could be.

So start asking Twitter your questions and see what happens!

Nonprofits Have NO Excuse For Not Using Social Media!

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Today I had a great talk with a friend about nonprofits using Social Media. We both came to the conclusion “if they are not using” they are about to be left behind, because the bus is about to leave the station. Later in the day I had the thought that I was way off base. The real deal is that each nonprofit has their own bus to drive…they all have to decide which bus they want to use and where they want to take it! There seems to be a lot of talking going on these days about whether nonprofits should be using Social Media- Let me be clear with you, in my opinion all nonprofits, if they are not already using Social Media, should be! The question should not be: “ Should we be using Social Media?” but “how can we start using Social Media today?”

Another question that seems to be asked is, “what are the benefits to using Social Media?”.  First, and foremost Social Media allows nonprofits the opportunity to tell people who they are, and what they are about – to tell their story, to tell people why they are doing what they are doing.  We all know that people want to be part of change, to be part of something good, we are all looking for something to be a part of, so is there a better tool than Social Media to connect with people and let them know how passionate your organization is? And how they can become apart of the story apart of the passion?

There seems to be two overriding questions nonprofits keep bringing up when I ask if they are utilizing Social Media. They both have to do with why they think they can’t get started. I hope to dispel for any nonprofit the excuse that they don’t have the money or they don’t have time.

1.    Expense

One of first expense related things, people think about when they consider using Social Media is: “we don’t have a person budgeted to maintain the tools of Social Media”. Honestly you don’t need a full-time person utilizing Social Media (Ill talk about that more in the “Time Section). In the beginning you should bring in a consultant to help you understand Social Media and how you can best you use it, this will cost you a little but the benefit will outweigh the cost within a few weeks.

Once you have talked to a consultant and you know what tools you want to use and what direction your now wanting take your Social Media Bus, its time to get started, but you’re still thinking “we don’t have anyone who has time!”. Well I would venture that there is someone in your office that is already involved with Social Media who would love to help out your organization drive your bus into the Social Media world. If not, there are a ton of 20 something’s who love your organization and would be thrilled to “drive” your Media bus. If you choose to use someone outside of your organization, giving them direction will be key in making sure that your venture is successful. Did you know that Chick-Fil-A’s fan page on Facebook is maintained by a mom who is not employed by them? Its true! That being said, it can be a huge benefit to have someone help make Social Media, work for you, until you have someone in your office doing it as part of their daily job.

If your nonprofit does not have much money set aside at this point for Social Media, don’t worry! Most of the tools to Social Media are free. If you want to post online videos (which is a great way for people to really see who you are) there is Youtube. Youtube.com is what everyone uses, but I would look at vimeo.com (its clean and less cluttered) and best of all its also free. Some of the best free microblogs are – Twitter.com, Yammer.com and ping.fm, the most well known at this point is twitter. If you feel a good tool for you is full on blog, I think the two best platforms for bloging are wordpress.com and blogger.com, because they are so easy to use, again both are free!

2. Time

Lots of people say that Social Media takes no time, well that’s not true. You’re reading this right now and its taking you time right? It is however, very easy to manage the time that will go into your organizations use of Social Media. If you do your research or hire someone to help you understand the correct tool or tools for your organization, you can instantly join in the “talk” that is already going on… and there is a good chance the “talk” is already there about your organization all with a very minimal time commitment.

There are lots of tools out there that makes it easy to interface the Social Media tools your organization chooses to use. These tools allow you to log into one place and correctly interact with your followers. The two that I know of are Friend Feed and Posterous. If you learn how to optimally use these tools you will have the best time management.

So really why is your nonprofit not using social media?

If you need our help we would love to help you get pointed in the right direction!

Somethings to Remember As You Tweet:

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Here are a few things that you should remember as you interact on Twitter:

  1. Be who you are! Don’t try to be something your not. Who you really are, has more value than the person your trying to be, and who we all know is not you!
  2. Talk about real life! Take a risk stop and say something your thinking, ask a question you would like to hear others opinions on! Let others know what your dealing with or what you facing.
  3. Be original! Many people feel they have to just say what others have already said, or see the need to be like your granddad who forwards you every cheese email that has been floating around cyberspace since 1998.
  4. Add Value! Your followers like you are always looking for some good advice or a hot tip! Take a little time and some research and have something of value to give them.
  5. Have fun! Twitter is a great place to have a good laugh. I know that often in the middle of the day I laugh as I read some good bantering or read about a funny story where someone is being Real with their followers.

Is it worth the time-

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

One question that I keep getting asked is: “Is it really worth the time to Twitter?” My answer is always YES. I have been using Social Media for the last year or so. In that short time I have found some amazing people who have dreams and hopes that I also carry. The thing that amazes me is that we are all normal people-but yet our society allows someone to take the statues of idol or celebrity. Social Media seems to transcends all of those preconceived bearers and allows you to make contact with someone who you other wise would have never guessed you could have talk to.

I know your wondering what does this have to do with me marketing my not-for-profit or my business?  It has everything to do with it, because it puts a real face on an ambiguous space or web site. Social Media allows the public to see who you are, what you do, how you act, which in turn gives the public a since of reality, your no longer a ad on or in a news paper-but your that cool person I talk to, who now has a ad in the news paper. Look at our now president-his campaign team used social media to get the word out, about events and his views on a subject. Allowing them to speak right to their constituents vs his words coming from someone else to them. It was there in there in their face-and it felt like he sent it just to them. A

Another question I am asked is: “Can real friendships come out of social media?” To which I say: “You betcha”.  Over the last year I have meet people from all walks of life, from around the world, some simply living and others simply trying to live, some very successful while others are still looking for that first successful idea. Yet we all have a unique place in this in this Global Social Village we call Social Media, all of which I now call friend! We talk about things we want to see happen in our own place of expertise and talk about how our network can help each other.

So will you watch this opportunity pass by? or will get on board and meet those around you who are changing culture and making true change for tomorrow?

Getting Started With Twitter #2

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Now that you have set up your account and setup your profile now you need to build a network. Twitter will allow you to import e-mail lists, contacts from instant messaging services, and you can find your friends on their search engine. The best way to build a list of interesting people is to go to the Twitter search engine at search.twitter.com and enter things that you like or that your into. Twitter will then generate all the people who have talked about the same subject on Twitter, then you can choose to follow them.

“Following” someone is the same thing as adding them as a Facebook or MySpace friend, the biggest difference is that they will not see your time line or updates unless they have chosen to follow you, as a curtsy to follow back someone who first follow you.

Once you start following someone, their updates, or “Tweets”, will appear in your “time line”, or your Twitter feed. If you find someone is no longer someone you want to follow for any reason, just “unfollow” or remove them by going to their profile page on the Twitter site; you may do this by clicking on their name. Click the arrow beside “Following” just below the top of their profile page and then click “Remove”.

To post your messages, or “Tweets”, go to your profile page and type your tweet into the ” What are you doing?”

Twitter

Well you now should be able to post to your time line and know how to follow people! Next time, we will talk about what you should “tweet” about so people want to follow your post.

Getting Started With Twitter

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

If your are like I was a few months ago, you are saying: What is Twitter let alone how to get started. Twitter is the fastest growing Social Network, I have read a few reports that say in February, 2009 Twitter grew by 30%. So lets just agree that you need to be doing it and here is how to get started, we will learn as we go what “Twittering” is what the benefit of Twittering.

To sign up for Twitter, go to twitter.com and click on “Get Started – Join!”. Fill in the information they ask for, before you know it you will have your on Twitter Account. As a note if you have a screen-name or a online handle you may want to use that as your screen name.

twitter

After you have set up your account you will want to set up your profile! Twitter gives you some backgrounds to choose from. If you want to mess around with a photo to make a different background click on Change Background Color. It will walk you through the steps to change or customize it to you liking. You can change these in your “Settings”, the link for which is located under your picture on your profile page on the right sidebar. Be sure to include your website or blog URL and information about yourself since Twipeople (Twitter people) will want to know about you!

Something that many Twipeople don’t do is upload a photo of themselves. You want to do this some people see who you are and so that they can recognize you and your face. So people choose to load their logo as well if they are twittering for a business. Eather way you will have better resluts when you add a photo.

That is how symple it is to get started with Twitter. Next we will talk about how to build your followers and how to build relationships.
